bus adventures: a year in review

i know i just posted a few photos from bus adventures (zombie edition) recently, but i’d like to recap a few favorites captured from the 6 months i’ve ridden this year. everyone posts lists of their favorite things of 2010, and instead i’ll share a gallery of strangers that made bus trips a little more enjoyable…er interesting.

most of the funniest/awkward things happen without me creepily taking a picture. examples include but are not limited to: public haircuts, beatboxing, fights, loud phone conversations, and (nsf)anywhere attire.

my favorite (crazy asshole) award goes to this lady pictured below. it was a cold winter day, i was waiting for the bus on the southbound side of N. lamar, in front of the new crestwood station. she was crossing, pushing that shopping cart while oncoming traffic honked and swerved. she approached me with an angry stare, suddenly gathered all the spit she could muster and fired away, shooting her lovely dna at me. luckily it only hit my shoe and medical attention was not necessary. we both stood at the stop for the next 20 minutes silently. i quickly realized once we both boarded the bus that she was clearly deaf, and extremely hateful. she informed all riders that they smelled terrible, at least she can smell.

bus people

these characters were seen on the north bound 1L yesterday, the third man’s face never changed the entire ride…

approaching a year…

it’s almost been a year since i found out i might be gluten sensitive, and now it seems i might actually have celiac’s disease.
in the end, living gluten free is not difficult, it’s just disappointing!
“yes, i’d love dessert, but no.. i can’t.. “
“yes i’d love to share the #4 with you because i’m broke too- but no, i can’t”
“yes i’d love a beer- but instead i’ll drink this stupid overpriced cider”

it’s just a part of my life that i manage- and as the years pass, i imagine i’ll have a better attitude about it!

a few places i visit in austin outside of my own kitchen..

-delish
-frank- hot dogs!
-mama fu’s
-snap kitchen
-taco deli
-pluckers
-zen
-chipotle- who hates it?- all is gluten free, except the tortillas- crispy tacos are the best!
-austin pizza sells a gf crust- haven’t tried it yet- from gluten free kneads – they also serve their dough at brick oven.
-ice cream cone? toy joy sells a great sugar cone with their vegan soft serve – yum!

on the internet
-atxglutenfree she posts some good recipes and resources
-alamo celiac although i’m not a member – they post some good info from time to time, and have potlucks. catering to more than just the celiac community just gluten sensitive in general.
-gluten free girl shauna james ahren is a sweet lady with a lovely story- she posts some great recipes
-yelp entries that mention gluten free
-another yelp list

from the store
-best gf bread EVER Udi’s brand- freezer section of central market- really it’s the best.
-best crackers- glutino – no question
-best cake mixes- betty crocker knows how it’s done, but bob’s red mill has a variety of yummy flours to use
-chex cereal- cinnamon, got me through some sad cereal withdrawl…
-mi-del cookies – the chocolate chip taste like chips-ahoy although not the best cookie ever made, but the nostalgia is enough
-deboles pasta- corn is almost always better than rice

i’ve realized it’s really amazing how many restaurants offer gluten free menus and most are knowledgeable to help you figure out what on their menu is gf.
there’s large number of gluten free folks in the atx area… and growing.

best week eva.

well i’ve successfully had the best week eva.
from march 13-21 has been the best nine days.
starting with a mobile social bike ride- awesome
followed by lame book party and free beer
next few days are a blur but i know they were real good…

highlights i can remember right now:
seeing MacGruber – fucking awesome
winning IFC’s scavenger hunt Wednesday- i rocked it 300$ apple gift card!
seeing best coast in a tiny room
dancing to cubia at iron works
running dt to catch a glimpse of bill murray – and failing
matthew maconahay is an ass
zooey deschanel is a likeable diva
rachael ray loves to sing along
perez hilton’s party was almost worth the wait in line- if i would have gotten in!
surprises (meaning i just walked into a venue and BLAM)- seeing andrew w k, sondre lerche, this will destroy you, Xzibt, Scissor Sisters, the middle east
losing my voice

THEN on saturday night. i got home, checked my mailbox & i’ve been summoned to jury duty. awesome.

i love the spring.

not sure what i’m doing next, but i’ve got both legs.

it snowed in austin today… big fuss.

got to leave work early.
took a few photos of the snow piled on the ground.
on the bushes. trees. really uneventful.
lounged listening to johnny cash.
made myself a nice mexidinner – made spanish rice out of instant brown rice- don’t judge!
appetite is slowly creeping back after a temporary visit from the stomach flu fairy. barf.

finally getting to listen to a few albums i had yet to acquire- feel like i’m out of the music scene.
and into a life of silent solidarity- not sure how it happened- but i’m working it out.

oh yeah, music.

sxsw 2010

i bought my first wristband. not sure if that was a great decision- but it was made.
took off three days of work.
currently am downloading a file that contains music from all artists playing this year.
spent approximately 3 hours after purchase of wristband -researching shows
updating my google calendar and frying my brain bit my bit.
it’s overwhelming how involved in planning i can be within minutes of a split second decision.

this morning i had zero events on my google calendar (mostly because i didn’t use it before today)
to having multiple events each day for 6 consecutive days. scary.
i felt like barfing most of the day- then i quickly committed myself to something so nerve-racking
never been a fan of crowds -but there’s something, almost nostalgic about going to sxsw
eating crappy food(not anymore), drinking stupid beer(not anymore) and seeing how many energy drinks it takes for me to become unhungover- or completely ill from realizing how gross they actually are.
sweating, bike riding, running into old friends, sxsw loveaffair (circa 2008), and finding myself disappointed from time to time- with bands, lines, weather, strangers.
but in the end -it can be an overwhelmingly fun experience – if not only for the people watching.

might post my crazy schedule once it’s almost ‘finalized’

local gluten free coverage… eh.

Recently there has a boom in the number of food products that are gluten free. The sticky substance that binds bread together creates problems for those suffering from celiacs disease and may exacerbate the problems of those with autism.

plane uneasy.

today has been something.
woke up with a hop in my step, made it to the bus stop in time- even after running back to my apt to get my phone (which happened to be in my bag). i wasn’t discouraged.

came to work, made coffee- did some work, made some fliers- updated some info.
then i got word of the plane crash- watched the videos online, heard the students mumbling about it in the hall. and my spirits fell down. someone asked me if it was a terrorist act.. i said no way.
it wasn’t
just a crazy man- with crazy pants, and a crazy agenda.

went near by to a store to pick up things for work- traffic was bad.
which made me uneasy at best. and then we avoided hitting the back of a large truck-
my anxiety took over.

i have a hard time being a passenger these days, i’m the one who now presses my feet to the floor when someone drives to close to the car ahead, the girl biting her lip and hoping not to offend with words and warnings of ‘watch out’ ‘see that car’ ‘waitttt’ i hate being that person. i haven’t had a car (control) in 3 years. each day i feel like i’m getting further and further from feeling safe in a car. i can drive, i feel fine- i’m alert and safe- but any other seat- for long drives in traffic – i’m trouble with a seatbelt.

breathing was hard. i opened the window to get air – something was odd about it
i finally achieved a calmer state- got out of the car at our destination- and smelled the burning building
it made me uneasy.
so uneasy.
smelling the after effects of something
so stupid
so selfish
and unnecessary
gross.

glad tomorrow is friday.

what i’m talking about.

got guts?

finally took a moment to research what people in my area are doing! and look a 5k to promote awarness for CD and Gluten Intolerance! and a gluten free food fair!?!

http://www.gotguts5k.com/

i’m thinking about going. can’t decide.
